startup

While you might think of tech as nothing more than something you use to access things, tech startups have accounted for billions of dollars in revenue, not only in this country but around the world. Think about the tech startup companies of yesteryear, such as Apple, Microsoft, Intel, Google, Twitter, and Facebook. While tech companies start small, they can quickly grow to become multimillion-dollar companies very quickly. Here are some tech trends that may be the next big thing.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial IntelligenceFor years, artificial intelligence (AI) was seen as something from a science fiction movie, when computers went haywire and caused destruction. However, artificial intelligence is now seen as computers that can think and function as humans do. Robots are now able to learn skills, perform assigned tasks, and make or upload changes to the Cloud. At the moment, AI is in the process of transforming how machines think and interact with each other, as well as with humans. AI allows inventory to be ordered without the interference of humans but based on information gathered from other machines. AI is able to begin diagnosing problems within systems, as well as suggest fixes for those systems.

The future is even more exciting. For example, while AI has come a long way, programmers must still program some aspects of the AI before the machine can take over. However, at some point, machines with AI will be able to understand ideas clearly, duplicate procedures, and come up with breakthroughs that humans can’t master as quickly because of the size and capacity of their brains. For example, a computer program can complete the equation and answers to a complicated physics problem in one hour, where it would take a human several months to calculate.

Self-driving

driveless taxiThere has been a lot of news in the press about self-driving cars lately, and not all of it has been good. You may have seen accidents in which self-driving cars hit objects or people. However, self-driving vehicles are the wave of the future. Google, Tesla, and Apple, as well as General Motors, have invested heavily in self-driving cars. However, to just think about self-driving cars on a small scale is not forward-thinking enough. Instead, companies are racing to develop cars, vans, buses, trains, and even airplanes that will eventually be self-propelled, which means that companies have to shift their thinking about roads, bridges, and overpasses. In the future, it may be that highways do not have as many exits because cars will no longer stop as much, and that will make transportation faster.

Recyclable Rocket Technology

Humans have been going into space for nearly 50 years. While that was a technological advancement, space exploration is expensive. It takes hundreds of people to be able to launch something into space. The average space exploration costs between $100 to $300 million, depending on the task performed. In addition, space exploration is inefficient because rockets could only be used one time. However, there are companies that are currently working on using and reusing rockets, which would make space travel far more efficient. In addition to creating rockets that are reusable, companies are reducing costs further by 3-D printing rocket parts and finding alternatives for rocket fuel as well.

Virtual Reality

virtual reality casinoCurrently, humans experience technology, but not usually in a virtual or augmented world, especially if you are a gamer. However, both of these realities are rapidly becoming important. Virtual reality takes you out of your world and puts you in another one. Augmented reality enhances the world around you. Increasingly, the Internet is not just something you look at. Instead, it is something you experience as well, and that opens up a whole new world for humans with regard to modeling, education, and creativity. In the future, humans may be able to explore the rainforest without going there or build a model of a possible new element.

Renewable Energy

Solar energy is rapidly becoming vitally important, and business and industries are moving toward greater and greater sources for renewable energy. Solar power is increasingly being revised, repurposed, and run through larger and larger power grids, using smaller and smaller panels, which means that solar energy can be used anywhere. In addition, some countries are using wind turbines to generate power as well. And, increasingly, turbines powered by the wind can be turned off or on using technology. Innovations are also being made in how quickly energy is being delivered.

Desalination

Many countries are having extreme water shortages, such as South Africa, China, and desert countries, such as Saudi Arabia. All these countries have an ocean nearby, but desalination is extremely difficult to do and is very expensive. However, technology is rapidly being developed that will allow countries to take in hundreds of thousands of gallons a day and turn it into potable water. This is extremely important as the world population has increased and climate change has made some areas much drier than others. In addition, tiny desalination plants are being developed for villages to clean their water effectively even if they are not close to an ocean, but their water is not safe to drink. It is safe to say that desalination plants are going to be vital for the world in the years to come.

DNA Analysis and Engineering

Humans are increasingly able to analyze not only their genetics but the genetics of their family as well online. This is important because it allows people to analyze their chances of getting specific diseases, why some people have addiction issues and others don’t, and the possibilities of preventative care. This puts people in charge of their own health and health-care issues, which is particularly important.

In addition to DNA analysis, tech trends of the future are also working to find individually specific cures for chronic diseases, such as cancer. Rather than trying to subject everyone to the same treatment, cures will instead be targeted to specific people and specific diseases based on their genetic codes. Immunotherapy will be used to engineer someone’s immune system and move from treating the disease to treating the person. The wave then will move from a cookie-cutter mentality of treating the disease to a treatment of a disease or disease process to a targeted intervention.

In the 1980s, the thought of self-driving cars, DNA treatments, and space travel seemed hundreds of years away. But, then, so did personal computers, smartphones, flat-screen TVs, and Bluetooth. Technology 500 years ago moved at a snail’s pace. For example, think how long it took for books to go from being handwritten to typeset to laser printing. People can print books for themselves in no time at all, or they can read them on their phones. Technology in the last 100 years has moved at a breakneck pace. Humans are going to have to move quickly in order to keep up with the technology of the future because it will continue to race along at a very fast speed. However, through careful reading, trends in technology can be spotted and acted upon. The trick is to know which tech trends will be successful and which tech trends will go the way of the Betamax tape.
