At a time when the casino industry has been seriously blighted by the pandemic, one casino is actually doing better since the coronavirus than last year. Parx Casino in Bensalem, PA made $7 million more in July 2020 than it did last year during the same month.

Grand Reopening

All 12 Pennsylvania casinos were shut down in March, but many began reopening in June. Parx is a ‘racino’, or a horse race track combined with a casino. After Parx casino reopened on June 29, they flew out of the starting gates with a bolt. By then end of July, Parx earned $59.8 million, over $7 million more than the previous July.

Even with a plethora of new safety rules in place, closed poker rooms and restaurants, and social distancing, Parx still made 14.4% more money than they did in July of last year.

Slot machine revenue always makes up the lion’s share of casino revenue, and Parx was no exception. Slot revenue jumped from $34 million in July 2019 to over $36 million last month.

Online Gambling Boost

Part of the reason Parx was able to stay in the black was online gambling. The casino offers a land-based casino open 24 hours per day and an online betting platform as well. Their online sportsbooks and internet gaming kicked in $7.4 million in revenues since the casinos closed.

Parx revenue sources include slots, video gaming terminals, sportsbooks, table games, fantasy contests, internet gaming, and horse racing. And unlike most land-based casinos, online casinos continued to operate and make money during the pandemic. Even with the brick-and-mortar casinos closed, you can still gamble while sheltering at home. All you need is the internet.

Meanwhile, the Parx land-based casino continues to welcome visitors and turn a brisk trade. All of the usual social distancing protocols are in place, games have been spaced apart, and visitors receive temperature checks before being allowed to enter the casino.

Parx is the largest casino complex in Pennsylvania, and together all 12 casinos in the state raked in $283 million in July. Parx offers thoroughbred racing, 3,200 slot machines, 188 table games, a poker room with 48 tables, several restaurants and bars, and an online wagering site.
