Sports fans normally betting on the NCAA March Madness college basketball tournament have another option for wagering: betting on the weather. Online sportsbooks are not letting the coronavirus crush their livelihood; they’ve just starting to offer different events to bet on.

The New March Madness

For years sports bettors look forward to March Madness, the major NCAA college basketball tournament featuring 68 basketball teams vying for the championship. The flurry of betting and surprise outcomes led to the tournament’s branding as March Madness.

But organized sports of any kind have been canceled due to the coronavirus. After a professional NBA basketball player contracted coronavirus, the entire sporting world ground to a standstill.

But people still love to bet on something; anything. And that’s why sportsbook company Bovada came up with some new ways to keep the sports betting madness going – by betting on the weather.

As of Monday, Bovada offered wagers on the weather in major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, and New York City. Players can bet on the minimum or maximum temperatures in those cities, or whether or not it will rain there.

We’re trying to cope with the loss of sports,” Pat Morrow of Bovada explained, “People are going to start feeling a little cooped up more sooner than later and if we can just have those little breaks, whether it’s betting on something silly … we’re all just trying to find different outlets to forget what’s happening.”

People Will Bet On Anything

While weather is an obvious topic of conversation (and good fuel for a wager), that’s not the only thing you can place your bets on at these clever sportsbookies.

Gamblers can also bet on popular TV shows like Westworld and American Idol. Place your bets on the final song in American Idol or what those wacky robots will do next on Westworld.

Bettors have turned their March Madness elsewhere, and global sports which normally get no attention from Americans are gaining traction. Gamblers can still bet on international sports like basketball in Argentina or soccer in Brazil.

As long as people have a bankroll and gambling fever, they’ll find an outlet for their betting needs. And online casinos and sportsbookies are happy to keep us busy during this coronavirus crisis.

Stay well and happy wagering!
