Week 2 in college football was not that exciting, compared with the upsets and shockers in Week 1. The reason was because most of the Power Five conference biggies played teams that were not up to the challenge. However, this week in college football brings more interesting games in terms of betting. Here are a few teams that might make some unique challenges for bettors who are looking to make some money.
Oklahoma (-18) vs. Iowa State
Last year, Oklahoma was 10-4 against the spread in the last 14 games. The team was the 31-point favorite when they lost to Iowa State in Norman. That is practically unheard of in the Sooner State. While this might tempt some gamers to bet against the Sooners, this is not the game to do so. The Cyclones aren’t the same as last year, and Oklahoma is currently 10-6 against the spread, even without Baker Mayfield.
Alabama (-19.5) vs. Ole Miss
Ole Miss has had Alabama’s number before. The team has beaten them twice in a row this decade. That is more than pretty much any other team in the SEC, not to mention the nation. However, Ole Miss has not been that impressive. While its offense can certainly score points, it seems its defense cannot stop other teams from scoring points. However, the Rebels might have a shot. They had a 2-2 straight up and 3-1 against the spread in their last four games. The Crimson Tide, however, is 12-0 straight up in the last 12 games it played in September. So, it appears the odds are against the Rebels.
TCU vs. Ohio State (-13)
This may be the most interesting matchup of the week. Both No. 4 Ohio State and No. 15 TCU are coming in strong. Both teams have two blowout wins in a row. At first glance, this game will be difficult to call. Both Ohio State and TCU have strong offenses, and Urban Meyer will miss this game because of his suspension.
Both Ohio State and TCU also have good defenses. However, you’d have to give the edge to Ohio State in this one. TCU is better at defending the pass, but not the run — but not by much. The game will be in Dallas, which might as well be in TCU’s backyard.
Although Ohio State has the spread, it may be much closer than that.
Confused? This one is tough to call. But, recent betting trends may help. Ohio State is 4-0 against the spread in its last four games. But, the under has had the advantage in four of the last five Buckeye games played at neutral sites. TCU is not doing nearly so well against the spread. The team is 1-4 in its last five games. The under has cashed in the last four times TCU has played a Big 10 opponent.
Ohio State may have this one, but it may not pick up the spread.
LSU v. Auburn (-13)
This may be the most interesting game of the whole day. There’s no doubt LSU’s new transfer quarterback was surprisingly calm when it came to destroying Miami in Week 1. Although Week Two’s opponent was an FCS, the Bayou Bengals have improved on their offense from last year. Their defense has been good for years, so expect to see several of these athletes eventually playing in the NFL.
However, Auburn is going to pound it down the throat of LSU rather than pass. That is going to make it harder to defend. In addition, Auburn has one of the best defensive fronts in the nation. This is going to present problems for the running and passing game of LSU.
This one is going to be close. Auburn won’t cover the spread. In fact, LSU may just pull this one out with a crazy play at the end.
